Prizewinners of the 2020 Gerry’s Jazz Challenge Announced

Meet the prizewinners of the 2020 Gerry Mulligan Jazz Challenge:

First Place Co-Winners

Durham Academy, North Carolina

Thank you so much for the opportunity you have gifted me by creating the Gerry and Franca Mulligan Foundation and it’s competitions! I think it gives young jazz lovers an amazing opportunity to learn about Gerry Mulligan, play his music, and keep the passion alive. I am so honored to have been selected as a top winner for this competition and I just wanted to let you know that I am extremely thankful for everything that you have done for this organization. Once again, thank you so much.

Apex High School, North Carolina

Gerry Mulligan was a pioneer in jazz for the baritone saxophone and revolutionized how the instrument was played and regarded. Over his time, he has played with some of the greatest jazz musicians ever, such as Miles Davis, Chet Baker, Dave Brubeck, Thelonius Monk, and more. He has been influential to many, and I am proud to be one of them. Ever since I picked up the baritone saxophone in the sixth grade, he has been a role model to me and I am truly honored to be selected for this award by the Gerry & Franca Mulligan Foundation and to have been able to download his music.

Second Place Co-Winners

Joel E. Ferris High School, Washington

The Gerry Mulligan foundation, Mrs. Mulligan especially, has carried our Mr. Mulligan’s wish to support music education for all with Grace, Nobility, and Beauty, and for that I have nothing else to say but thank you!

I mean those words above truly. College alone is scary, but going into the performing arts on top of it is simply terrifying. But this scholarship has instilled hope simply because I never expected anything from the competition, I was just doing what I loved to do, which was perform. I am more confident now because I know that if I trust myself and do what I love, no matter what if I stay true, others just might enjoy themselves too! So thank you, thank you past the stars and back!!

Mount Spokane High School, Washington

I especially love playing the bari and being able to play Gerry Mulligan’s music was such an honor. I studied his music and learned a lot more about him while preparing for this contest.
